The North Suburban Symphony, a community orchestra based in Lake Forest and dedicated to providing performance outlets for talented Lake County high school youth, held its James Glacking Young Musicians Competition at Gorton Community Center in Lake Forest on Friday, November 12.

This marks the nineteenth year (26th season) that the North Suburban Symphony has sponsored the competition which gives young Lake County musicians an opportunity to perform with a symphony orchestra.

The competition originated in the fall of 1984 as part of the now disbanded Liberty-Freemont Concert Society. It was spearheaded by James Glacking, now deceased, who in 1991, upon becoming chairperson of the NSS, introduced the Competition to the NSS.

His widow, Marjorie Glacking of Libertyville still generously contributes every year to the James Glacking Young Musicians Competition. The North Suburban Symphony also wishes to applaud Sunset Food of Highland Park, Lake Forest, Libertyville and Northbrook for its generous donation of the past several years to cover the 1st prize winner of the Competition.

The students performing in this year’s Competition were selected by a panel of judges composed of members of the North Suburban Symphony. After listening to all of the submitted audition tapes, the panel chose eight students all of whom demonstrated outstanding talent and preparation.

The following high schools in Lake County were represented by the eight selected students who performed at Lake Forest’s Gorton Center on Nov. 12: Barrington High School (Stephanie Block, viola), Libertyville High School (Sandeep Balasubramanian, flute); New Trier High School (Emily Jones, violin and Sofia Kim, violin); Stevenson High School (Devon Naftzger, viola); Vernon Hills High School Karen Mari, trombone); John Hersey High School (Natalie Gaynor, violin); and Lake Zurich High School (Vinithra Rajagopalan, soprano).

The judges for the Competition were Robert Bassill, Orchestra Director, Lake Forest High School; Charles Emmons, Music Educator and Clinician; and James M. Stephenson, an internationally-known composer who resides and composes in Lake Forest.

After an extended period of deliberation by the judges three winners were selected. But before being announced, James Stephenson, speaking on behalf of the other two judges, commented on the superb performances of all eight of the youthful soloists, “Each one of you should be proud of your performances tonight.”

To add to the suspense, each performer was asked to come forward to receive a certificate of participation and a long-stemmed rose. Only then were the three winners announced for this year’s sixteenth James Glacking Young Musicians Competition.

They were are follows: 1st Prize Winner, Emily Jones, violin, a sophomore at New Trier High School; 2nd Prize Winner, Stephanie Block, viola, a junior at Barrington High School; Sofia Kim, violin, New Trier High School.

Monetary awards were presented to all three winners. As the first prize winner, Emily Jones will be performing with the North Suburban Symphony at it’s March 12, 2011 concert at Gorton Center in Lake Forest at 4:00 p.m.

Members of the 2010 Glacking Competition Committee (all NSS members) were Melinda Vajdic, Chairperson; Charles Emmons, Jr., Suzanne Ingold; and Tung J. Jeong.

The next North Suburban Symphony concert is scheduled for Sunday, November 21, at 4:00 p.m. at Gorton Center in Lake Forest. Included on the program titled, Two For One, are the “Bruch Concerto for Viola & Clarinet” and “Brahms Concerto for Violin and Cello.” Soloists for the program are Ron Arden (Viola); Stephen Ahearn (Clarinet); Cynthia Arden (Violin); and Barb Cannon (Cello).

Ron Arden is the Music Director of the North Suburban Symphony.
